Kansas Criminal Records Online

Use KBI for the Kansas repository search
Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) offers public name-based criminal-history checks for $30 per individual through its Criminal History Record Search service. The Central Repository receives Kansas arrest, prosecution, disposition and state-confinement information. It does not contain events from other states or federal agencies, and it is not the same product as a county court’s complete case file or the Kansas Registered Offender website.
Begin with the subject’s first and last names and accurate date of birth. Review the spelling before paying. The FAQ suggests a common first-name prefix when spellings or nicknames vary, and explains that an alias unknown to law enforcement can produce a no-record response. Fingerprints are the preferred identification method when a name match is uncertain.
Know exactly what the public response can include
Public release includes adult felony and misdemeanor convictions, equivalent municipal or county convictions, Kansas Department of Corrections confinements, active diversions not yet successfully completed, and arrests within the past twelve months whose dispositions have not been received. An arrest or active diversion in that response should not be described as a conviction.
The public product excludes juvenile records, expunged events, successfully completed diversions and disposed arrests that did not result in conviction. It also excludes arrests at least twelve months old with no received disposition. Fingerprinting improves the match but does not enlarge what an ordinary public requester is allowed to receive. A subject’s complete personal review is a separate request.
Complete the follow-through if KBI needs manual review
Fully automated records can be displayed immediately. If a possible match is only partly automated, the service offers a manual search so staff can enter missing paper-record information. Choose the offered follow-up and watch for the email telling you to return to the website. KBI’s FAQ says this automation work should take one or two business days; it is a published expectation, not proof that every delayed search is complete.
A possible match can become a no-record response after staff corrects names, birth dates or other information, or removes material that should not remain in the database. Do not report an incomplete potential match as a confirmed criminal history. Keep the transaction reference so KBI can find the request you already paid for.
Save the result within seven calendar days
Open the dashboard and select the person’s name in the Search Name column, then print or save the result. KBI allows viewing for up to seven calendar days and does not charge to revisit the transaction during that window. The result describes the record at the time of the search; criminal histories can change as dispositions and court orders arrive.
After seven days, call the Criminal Records Unit at 785-296-2454 or email [email protected] about obtaining the result. The FAQ says results can be mailed and requests more than sixty days old must be requested again. Store the report securely and restrict access to people who need it for the purpose of the check.
Order a mailed certified response when certification is required
Certified KBI checks for a visa, adoption, immigration or similar purpose are not available through the ordinary online search. Print and mail the Certified Record Check Request form; email is not the request route. A name-based certified check costs $40, or $55 when fingerprint-based. The certified response is mailed and contains the repository supervisor’s original signature and notarized embossed seal, rather than simply a web printout.

Identify a different response addressee on the request if needed. Certification validates the response; it does not make the public record comprehensive or replace a court’s certified judgment. KBI does not publish a single mailed completion guarantee on this guidance page.
Request your full personal history or a fingerprint-based match
To review your entire Kansas history, mail a signed request letter identifying you, your purpose and return address, one completed fingerprint card, and a $45 check or money order to KBI’s Criminal History Records Section. KBI specifies FD-353, with FD-258 accepted as a substitute. Do not fold or staple the card. This personal response includes restricted categories such as juvenile, expunged and nonconviction information that the public web product does not release.
An ordinary fingerprint-based public check is also $45 and is requested by mail, but returns only the information authorized for that purpose. If you use KBI’s Topeka fingerprint service, its published collection charge is $10, by appointment at 785-296-4038, Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; no cash is accepted. That collection charge is separate from processing the record check.
Interpret a no-record result and correct incomplete history
No record found can mean there is no record in KBI’s files or no releasable record. Check for an incorrect name or birth date, an unrecorded alias, another state’s event, a nonreportable offense or a reporting gap. An old search is not a permanent clearance; a later decision may require current information.
If your history is wrong, contact 785-296-2454 for instructions or write KBI with the disputed information and documents showing the correction, such as the court’s final journal entry. Keep the response and check the revised record. Kansas also says an employer must initiate an employment record check and cannot require you to obtain your own Kansas history as a condition of employment; ask the employer to use its proper process.
